HideMyAss Review

This aptly-named VPN service offers the broadest server connectivity in the world. HideMyAss (HMA! Pro), based in the U.K., has rose to prominence through its strong connectivity due to a breadth of server offerings worldwide and its bold and stylish branding.

Ease of Use

The VPN client offers three modes of access: Instant, Location, and Freedom. In Instant mode, you’ll be automatically connected to the fastest server near you. In Location mode, you can choose your own desired server from a nearly comprehensive list of countries. In Freedom mode, the client connects you to the closest free-speech country outside your own.

In terms of ease of use, the program is very user-friendly, with an interface that’s both attractively designed and intuitive in the way menus are organized. They also offer the VPN on mobile devices for iOS and Android.

VPN Location

HMA! Pro has more server locations than any other VPN on the market. Their servers are stretched across more than 190 countries all over the world. This includes the UK, US, China, New Zealand, Nigeria, Portugal, and Norway, to name a few. Just between 2014 and the present, they have expanded their server list from 638 to over 940 servers. See the comprehensive HMA! server list here.

One month of service is $10.99 per month, six months is $7.49 per month, and one year is $5.99 per month. They provide the option to pay with gift cards for a wide variety of major retailers – including Walmart, Starbucks, and Target.

While they offer a free proxy service, they don’t offer a free or trial version of their VPN. In comparison with other VPN services, the monthly rate is competitive. As it measures against Express VPN, Nord VPN, and Pure VPN, the fee comes in slightly lower or on-par.

hma_privacyHMA! Pro is secure, although it does ambiguously log user data – which might be a detriment for some users.

However, those who are primarily using the VPN for Netflix or Hulu video streaming may be in for a disappointment. Because these services have blocked HMA! and other top VPN servers from accessing their site, it may be impossible to bypass these terms of service. The HMA! response to this is that, “HMA! has and always will advise users to respect the terms of service for any websites they choose to visit,” furthermore, they state, “we will not provide guidance on how to use our service to bypass blocks by a specific service.”

According to PCMag.com, HMA! Pro has good speed test results. Nord VPN, the least impactful VPN on upload speed, slows uploads by a little over 31 percent. HMA! Pro only clocks in a little more decrease in upload speed at just over 34 percent. These numbers might be acceptable to a user looking to stream music or videos, especially when download speed decreases by only 1.3 percent.

These statistics might look daunting on paper, but the real test is shown at the hands of the user. All VPNs will slow downloads, uploads, and have an increase in latency; and reviewers elsewhere have reported a tolerable level of slowness.

Customer support

hma_support2HMA! Pro provides a comprehensive knowledge base, help forum, email support, and live chat support.

When I contacted live support, it took about ten minutes for a response. The agent was knowledgeable and attentive, and notified me before closing out our session after resolving the issue. The HMA! Pro support website states that the live chat service is technically available 24/7, however, gaps in service may occur.
